Ukraine's attacks on Russian territory may 'warrant' nuclear response under Putin's proposed nuclear doctrine changes

Russian President Vladimir Putin today issued a set of proposed updates to the country's nuclear doctrine and deterrence strategy.

The changes would now qualify "aggression against Russia by any non-nuclear state, but with the participation or support of a nuclear state" as a "joint attack on the Russian Federation."

"We reserve the right to use nuclear weapons in case of aggression against Russia including if the enemy poses a critical threat to our sovereignty with conventional weapons," Putin said.

The proposed changes appear to come as a response to Ukrainian's ongoing offensive in Russia's Kursk region, as well as its continuous drone strikes on military objects inside Russia.

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky has also been vocal in pursuing approvals from Western allies to use Western-built long-range missiles for attacks deep inside Russian territory.
