The market capitalisation of the BSE listed companies fell by Rs 23 lakh crore with 736 stocks hitting lower circuits and 285 crashing to 52-week lows on the BSE.
Amid a bloodbath in the Indian stock markets, 736 stocks hit their lower circuits while 285 number of stocks crashed to their 52-week lows on the . Out of the 3,873 stocks that were trading today on India's oldest exchange, 3,402 declined while the advances were at 370. Just over 100 stocks were unmoved.Among the stocks which hit their lower circuits include , J&K Bank, , , One 97 Communications (), , Swan Energy and and Shakti Pumps.
The of the BSE listed companies fell by Rs 23 lakh crore as the S&P BSE today crashed to a low of 70,234.43, falling by over 6,200 points from Monday's close of 76,468.78.
There were a few silver linings too with 119 stocks hitting their 52-week high while 92 hit their upper circuits.
Today's was on account of the general election results which show Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led alliance scoring much lower than what Saturday's had suggested. On the contrary, India alliance which was shown to be contending with much lower tally managed to comfortably cross 225.
While these are only initial trends and may change at the time of final count.
Riding on the exuberance of the exit polls on Saturday, Sensex hit a record high of 76,738.89.
Sensex and Nifty erased all of the gains recorded on Monday's session as exit poll euphoria had predicted 350+ seats for NDA, a seemingly far-fetched prospect. The total market capitalisation of all stocks fell by nearly Rs 21.5 lakh crore late in the morning.
But this may just be the beginning of a short-term downtrend in the market if NDA's seat tally turns out to be below the 300-level, say.
"Following the exit poll results, the market had factored in around 350 seats for NDA and now if it falls below 300 then it would be a big disappointment for bulls," said Kranthi Bathini of WealthMills Securities.
Some analysts are also of the opinion that the market could be over-reacting to early trends.
