U.S. stocks lower at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average down 0.34%

Investing.com – U.S. stocks were lower after the close on Thursday, as losses in the Consumer Goods , Basic Materials and Industrials sectors led shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.34%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.20%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 0.16%.

The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA ), which rose 2.99% or 4.01 points to trade at 138.30 at the close. Meanwhile, Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX ) added 1.29% or 1.87 points to end at 146.71 and McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD ) was up 0.90% or 2.62 points to 292.51 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Boeing Co (NYSE:BA ), which fell 2.90% or 5.13 points to trade at 171.87 at the close. Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE ) declined 2.64% or 2.00 points to end at 73.67 and Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL ) was down 2.62% or 6.57 points to 243.85.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were Vistra Energy Corp (NYSE:VST ) which rose 8.55% to 149.66, Constellation Energy Corp (NASDAQ:CEG ) which was up 8.44% to settle at 242.60 and First Solar Inc (NASDAQ:FSLR ) which gained 5.80% to close at 186.47.

The worst performers were Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA ) which was down 6.08% to 379.28 in late trade, General Motors Company (NYSE:GM ) which lost 3.58% to settle at 51.37 and PPG Industries Inc (NYSE:PPG ) which was down 3.37% to 115.42 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were N2OFF Inc (NASDAQ:NITO ) which rose 331.45% to 1.07, Electra Battery Materials Corp (NASDAQ:ELBM ) which was up 322.78% to settle at 1.96 and C3is Inc (NASDAQ:CISS ) which gained 180.31% to close at 1.60.

The worst performers were Neumora Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:NMRA ) which was down 81.42% to 1.97 in late trade, Mars Acquisition Corp (NASDAQ:MARX ) which lost 74.77% to settle at 2.48 and Shineco Inc (NASDAQ:SISI ) which was down 54.19% to 2.08 at the close.

Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 1506 to 1311 and 51 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1805 rose and 1511 declined, while 115 ended unchanged.

Shares in PPG Industries Inc (NYSE:PPG ) fell to 52-week lows; losing 3.37% or 4.03 to 115.42. Shares in Neumora Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:NMRA ) fell to all time lows; falling 81.42% or 8.63 to 1.97. Shares in Mars Acquisition Corp (NASDAQ:MARX ) fell to all time lows; falling 74.77% or 7.35 to 2.48.

The CBOE Volatility Index , which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 3.34% to 17.93.

Gold Futures for February delivery was up 1.14% or 30.07 to $2,671.07 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in February rose 1.98% or 1.42 to hit $73.14 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract rose 1.70% or 1.27 to trade at $75.91 a barrel.

EUR/USD was down 0.84% to 1.03, while USD/JPY rose 0.20% to 157.57.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.73% at 109.09.
