Is the stock market closed today for Muharram?

Stock markets will be closed on July 17 for Muharram. BSE and MCX to observe the holiday.

will remain on Wednesday, July 17, in observance of , according to the market holiday calendar of . Consequently, all segments, including the equity segment, derivative segment, and SLB segment, will be closed today.

Meanwhile, the Multi-Commodity Exchange (MCX) will also remain closed for the morning session but will be open for the evening session.

Further, apart from Muharram (July 17), in 2024, the will be shut for Independence Day (August 15), Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti (October 2), Diwali (November 1), Gurunanak Jayanti (November 15) and Christmas (December 25).

The exchanges may alter any of the above holidays, for which a separate circular will be issued in advance.

In Tuesday's , Indian benchmark equity indices rose to record highs, led by information technology shares on firming bets of a rate cut as early as September.

The S&P BSE Sensex closed at a new lifetime high of 80,716.55 while the broader Nifty too settled at an all-time closing high of 24,613.

Among Sensex shares, Hindustan Unilever, , Tech Mahindra, , Mahindra & Mahindra, , ITC and were the biggest winners.

On the other hand, , , , and Power Grid were among the laggards.

"In the next few days in the run up to the Budget, the market is likely to anticipate the Budget proposals and respond. Even though Budget anticipations are speculative, this Budget will be growth oriented and at the same time fiscally prudent," said V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, .

"Tax buoyancy and the RBI dividend bonanza give the finance minister ample room for fiscal consolidation. Therefore, the market will be optimistic on this ground," Vijayakumar added.
