In a now-deleted X post, scammers impersonated the Matthew Perry Foundation and urged people to donate via crypto.
As by Rolling Stone, scammers targeted the X account of the late “Friends” star Matthew Perry, promoting crypto donations through a website impersonating the Matthew Perry Foundation.
In a on Instagram, the foundation warned against engaging with the fake website or sharing the fraudulent post on social media. The foundation also urged followers to report impostor accounts and to only donate through MatthewPerryFoundation.org.
The Matthew Perry Foundation is a donor-advised fund established in November 2023 to honor Matthew Perry’s commitment to helping individuals struggling with addiction.
Perry tragically passed away in late October 2023 from drowning at his Los Angeles home. An autopsy report later revealed the presence of “high levels of ketamine” in his bloodstream, believed to have caused his unconsciousness and subsequent drowning. Contributing factors included coronary artery disease and the effects of buprenorphine.
